Hey everyone,

As we're still in the midst of finalizing camp details, it is important that we keep you updated on the latest updates and happenings pertaining to all things YWC. So, for this purpose, we have created a Facebook event that you, yes YOU (!) can join to stay updated on this year's YWC.

How do I join?
All you need is a Facebook account. If you already have one, just visit our event page here, and RSVP "Attending" or "Maybe attending". Once you have done so, you are now a registered "guest" of our event. You will receive all updates and notices we send out about the camp!

Oh, and did we mention it's an open event? That means you can tell your other friends on Facebook about it and invite them to be a part of it as well!

We appreciate sponsorship (either monetary or in kind). If you would like a copy of the sponsorship form, please e-mail us at youngwriterscamp@gmail.com. Your sponsorship will help to subsidize camp costs.

Although campers will be paying a fee of RM 160 that will cover their food, transport, stationery and lodging for three days, it’s not enough to cover the expenses of the entire camp. Much of the camp’s expenses are covered through sponsorship.

We are still in the process of much discussion and fine-tuning of the camp programme for this year, but here's a little something we can share with you:

The camp will be set up to run as a "media company", and campers will have the opportunity to take part in gathering information, writing articles, taking photographs, podcasting, and publishing their work. We will also be going on field assignments to find interesting stories to write about. This is a great opportunity to get a taste of what working in the media is like!

Whether you've always aspired to be a journalist or not, we're sure this year's camp will be something to look forward to. Be notified of more camp updates by joining our Facebook event!

Yes! It’s going to be held during November 29 – December 2 at Harvest Haven in Gopeng. Places are limited, so book yours as soon as possible! Camp fees for this year's camp have yet to be confirmed, but as soon as we get the information, we will update you.

Originally a project to get the works of young writers published in Phases magazine, the Young Writers’ Camp is now letting its campers choose the kind of projects they want to work on.

1. What is the Young Writers' Camp?

The Young Writers’ Camp is a series of camps organized by the Scripture Union that has been in the running for nearly ten years. Originally a project to get the works of young writers published in Phases magazine, the Young Writers’ Camp is now letting its campers choose the kind of projects they want to work on.

The camp is open to young people between the ages of 13 to 20. However, those who are slightly above or below the age limit can still attend the camp, provided they’ve contacted us to negotiate their attendance first.

2. What were the fruits of the Young Writers' Camp?

Ex-campers called themselves the Phyw (pronounced ‘few’), but this soon became a misnomer when they rapidly increased in number. The Phyw often met together in large gathering like ConFEWsion (invade someone’s house, make a lot of noise, eat, perform, and enjoy each other’s company) and or in smaller groups like in D-Fewsion (watch a movie, discuss books, pray and meditate). They kept in touch with the Phases Young Writers’ Mailing List. Over the years ex-members of the Phyw grew into a community of loyal friends that has been lasting for many years.

On the professional side of things, many members of the Phyw had their earliest experience of professional publishing through Phases magazine. They attended meetings, brainstormed ideas, and were in charge of finding stories to be featured in the next issue. This became valuable experience for them as many of them went on to have careers in journalism, public relations, research and consultancy, advertising, education – to name a few.

3. Will there be a Young Writers' Camp this year?

Yes! It’s going to be held during August 18 – 20 at Bukit Tinggi Resort at Berjaya Hills (somewhere near Genting Highlands). Due to limited space, we have to limit the number of campers to thirty. We’ve already gotten campers even at this early stage, so hurry before places run out! Camp fees will be RM 160 at a normal rate and RM 180 for late registration.

Yikes! Isn’t that expensive?

It is a little on the price-y end, but it does cover food, transportation, stationery and lodging for three days. The truth is: it’s much cheaper than how it would cost if you had to pay for everything. Much of this camp has already been paid for by our sponsors.

4. What's the programme like?

Campers will be part of a three-step programme over the course of three days. During the first step, we’ll explore our motivations for writing by learning to write for ourselves. At the second phase we’ll learn how to use our gifts for writing to glorify God. The third stage will involve putting our writing into action: writing for the community (writing for others).

After the camp, campers are then free to group together and embark on a project of their own choice. You may publish a book, launch a magazine, or come up with something completely unexpected. It’s entirely your call! During this period of time, campers will be guided (but not lead) by some of the adults who are part of the camp’s organizing committee.

5. Who are the adults involved?

Facilitators
Alvin Ung has been a corporate magnate, a journalist, a theologian and an all-round servant of Christ. He has a strong calling to work with young people and writers, having been part of the Young Writers Camp series when it was first established. He now works as a Vice President of Khazanah Nasional Berhad.

Catalina Rembuyan teaches and reads English literature at the University of Malaya. She writes for various youth publications in Malaysia and Singapore and writes poetry. She was a member of the Phyw and will be Camp Commandant.

David Tan runs an advertising firm. As the head of the Malaysian Homeschooling Network, he is deeply interested in the development of young people and educating them outside of the limitations of the schooling system.

Roshan Thiren works in training people for corporations like Khazanah Nasional Berhad and Johnson & Johnson’s. He has been reaching out to East Malaysian workers in Kelana Jaya by translating Christian literature. He will be in charge of overseeing the project conception and implementation aspect of the Young Writers’ Camp.

Sieh Jin is a full-time worker at Scripture Union.

Yam Phui Yee works at the youth desk at The Star. She was a member of the Phyw and is the Camp Coordinator.

Speakers
Colin Kirton is a professional thespian, having been involved in numerous stage productions. He is the founder and artistic director of Footstool Players, a Christian theatre group. He will be leading a workshop on writing for the stage.

Ng Wah Lok has been writing and composing deeply moving praise and worship songs, and has been training many young musicians to do the same. In this camp, he will be teaching campers how to write Christian songs that catch the ear and move the spirit.

Siaw Mei Li is a lecturer at Sunway University College. She has an extensive background in advertising. She will be leading a workshop on journal-writing.

Sivin Kit is pastor at Bangsar Lutheran Church, Kuala Lumpur. He runs a popular weblog at http://sivinkit.net.

Tricia Yeoh is a member of the Malaysian think-tank ASLI. She will be leading a workshop on blogging.

6. What do you hope to achieve through this camp?

We believe that Malaysia – and to a greater extent, our world – is undergoing a process of change and that young people, especially those who are Christians, need to be active participants of society and create an impact in their community. Through this camp, we hope to empower young Christians through writing and teach them how to use their gifts for the betterment of their community.

We aim to achieve this not just through grounding youths in the Word and in the theories of writing, but also by giving them room to put their ideas into practice. Campers will be embarking on a project of their choice after the camp, under the guidance of camp facilitators.

The project implementation stage will hopefully achieve two things: firstly, the projects undertaken will create an impact in the lives of the members of the community they serve, and secondly, the experience will be a learning process that campers will find very valuable.

A cause for joy; The Camp Cause

Hi all, I'm here again with more news about the Young Writers' Camp 2007.

Things have been going on wonderfully so far. Us organizers -- Phui Yee, Alvin Ung, Uncle David, Mei Li, Tricia, Kim Guat, Sieh Jin and all -- have been meeting regularly and it's been great to see how things have been progressing since we first decided to have the camp this year. As mentioned earlier, the camp will be held at Gracehill Orchard Lodge in Bukit Tinggi. We've gotten a good amount of interest in the camp, and a fair number of people have expressed commitment for the camp cause.

Ah, the camp cause. Forgot to include that in the last post.

The themes for each Young Writers' Camp differs with every different one held, and this year the theme is Write to Know: Writing to know Self, God, and Others. It's an answer to the age-old question that hits writers regardless of age or experience: why write? Some people write to fill their rice bowl, others write in the secret (or not so secret) hope of achieving glory one day. In this camp, we're going to explore another reason for writing.

The camp will feature a three-step process in which campers will firstly learn writing as a tool to express themselves. Secondly, campers will learn what it means to use these gifts of writing to serve God, and then finally what it means to practically apply these principles in the 'real world': to create projects that will create a difference in their community.

Oh, a note: this is a Christian camp, but non-Christians are welcome. The camp is open to an age group of around 13 to 19 (negotiable -- if you're just plus or minus that age, no need to sweat it too much). Grown-ups interested in this project may contribute by donating through sponsorship, small scholarships or in kind (e-mail me at chibikarcy@gmail.com for the form). We've also got room for people willing to mentor young writers.

Hi, I'm Karcy. Welcome to the Young Writers' Camp Blog. This is a blog made to keep you updated on the Young Writers' Camp, a series of camps held by Scripture Union.

What is the Young Writers' Camp?
The Young Writers' Camp is a series of camps held on a near-annual basis. Organized by Scripture Union Malaysia, the camp is the meeting ground for many young Malaysians who wish to develop their writing skills, with the ultimate aim of becoming writing for the glory of God. Each camp is held in a different location in Malaysia, with each camp bearing a different theme.

Will there be a Young Writers' Camp this year?
The Young Writers' Camp 2007 will be held on August 18 to the 21st this year. It will be held at Gracehill Orchard Lodge in Bukit Tinggi (near Genting Highlands). Participants will have to pay a registration fee of RM 160, which will include accommodation, transport, and food. Registration is now open.
